Raven Rock Story

The Raven Rock: How the Raven Became the Messenger of the Forest

Story version by Tim Thomas, as told by Creek Indian Billy Whitefox, Red Heart Clan

Once upon a time, the animals of the forest gathered to thank Grandfather the Creator. As they assembled, each animal paraded before Grandfather, who was seated on his throne, showcasing their splendid attributes. The deer flaunted his magnificent antlers, the growling bear displayed his powerful maw and paws, the birds fluttered by with their brightly colored plumage, singing their cheerful songs, and the wolves howled the song of family and friendship within the forest's embrace.

Humbled, the raven was too embarrassed to approach the throne. He had no vibrant plumage, being as black as night, and his caw was loud and unpleasant to most. He felt he had no gifts to honor Grandfather.

Instead, the raven flew to a river near his home and chose a rock from the riverbed, beautiful in shape and color. He returned to Grandfather and presented his gift.

The forest creatures laughed, mocking the raven's small and insignificant rock. Grandfather picked up the rock and asked the raven why he had brought it to him.

The raven explained that the rock was not only beautiful but had been shaped by the Earth, plants, trees, rushing water, and sunlight. When he saw the rock, he saw the world as a whole, and it reminded him of Grandfather's love for all creation.

Grandfather smiled and held the rock up. He said, "You have given me a precious gift, and in return, I give you a new purpose. You are to go and tell this story throughout the forest to all who will listen, and how I, Grandfather of the Forest, have blessed every living creature."

Grandfather picked up a vine, shaped it into a ring, inlaid the rock, and placed it on his finger, where he proudly wears it to this day.
